Energy Concerns

As I mentioned in a post awhile back that there was no insulation in the attic. And I just mentioned about the skeleton keys, with those type of keys, come an actual hole in your door.

Come to find out, the owners (older and loved a warm home) used 1,500 to 2,000 gallons of heating oil per year. (GULP) Bill and I decided we needed to take care of this big expense.

Come to find out, the orginal house had single pane windows with wavey glass. These windows don't have any locks to them and bang in the wind.

One of the four front doors wasn't really a front door...it was a storm door with a hook latch. After looking at all of the doors, we realized we could see the light of day on the bottom of each one. There was a dutch door that was installed in the new addition, and that door had the light of day not only coming in on the bottom but also where the door split. I had mentioned before that on the side of the house was an unheated breezeway and mudroom, we realized that the doors going into the mudroom were just french decorative doors, no security or energy concerns were thought through when this was installed.
